One ay a friend called me and told me she had found dog roaming around a busy intersection. I already had three dogs but was afraid I would drive by that area and find her dead on the side of the road.
After searching for an owner and posting in the local lost and found bulletin boards, she quickly became a part of the family.
When I read about rottweilers on the Internet and learned they had been bred for herding cattle and sheep as well as protecting the herd from predators. I also learned that the brown dots above her eyes were bred into their genes so the wolves could not tell if she was dozing - it’s the same reason sheep dogs have hair covering their eyes. It wasn't long before she would herd the other three dogs into the house for the night or when I was leaving the house.
She is the most gentle dog I have ever been around. When my relatively rowdy (and much smaller) little pit bull gets too feisty for her she quickly ducks her head under the nearest table or chair and just waits her out.
My friend came up with the name Montana after a little brainstorming. Seeing her from a distance and not knowing her personality she is intimidating to say the least. Later I added ‘Gorgeous’ to her name because everyone who met her nearly always told me she was gorgeous. And she was. She is a natural protector and has a lot of character. She never barks unless there is a threat either real or perceived. She always lets me know when the mail arrives and if there is anyone at the door.
