# Drivers exercise due care - Every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary (RCW 46.61.245).
.
# Drivers must yield to pedestrians at intersections - Vehicles stall stop at intersections to allow pedestrians and bicycles to cross the road within a marked or unmarked crosswalk (RCW 46.61.235). See Washington's Crosswalk Law for more information.
.
# Pedestrians must yield to vehicles outside intersections - Every pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection shall yield the right of way to all vehicles upon the roadway (RCW 46.61.240).
.
Nothing here about revving the engine and speeding up that I can find.

Then use your OWN screen-name. Alts are the last resort of the incompetent. Whether it be beerboy, arts, moderate, or any number of the plethora you've registered, it's annoying and, in all honesty, confusing for other people, when you sign on any of the other accounts.

much classier than choosing to be a bully... we see enough of that every day. I'm with you- more people need to just laugh instead of yell, curse or intimidate!

Submitted by AmandaDaniel on June 30, 2008 - 7:24pm.

When I open the News Tribune up and some jaywalker has pulled out a gun and shot you in the head. Intimidating is much, much less dangerous than antagonizing. And what your "plan" does? It's antagonizing. As in, provoking a response without any of the backup that intimidation does. It's the "big dog" syndrome.

Unbelievable

Any walker is in danger. I recently lost a friend killed in a crosswalk. The issue isn't just jaywalkers -its drivers too busy watching dvds, texting, cell phoning and just all too filled with their personal belief that getting to where they want to be FAST is more important than just slowing down and being a respectful defensive observant driver.
Sadly, occasionally a jay walker is hit by no true fault of a driver but that's becoming the rarity. We have all heard the increasing stories of cars swerving towards people on the sides of the road or other sub humans who hit some one and drive off, etc. I have personally seen idiots travel down residential streets and start honking a half a block away for my elderly neighbor to get out of the road -all because THEY couldn't be bothered to show some class and slow down ( or even go the speed limit). By heavens- it's THEIR road- THEY have the almighty car you know!
The new weapon in town is the car and its becoming the wild west for anyone who gets in drivers way. Especially when judges tell offenders awaiting trial to " not incur any more traffic violations till their trial date" seen in recent hit and run cases. Yes - teach kids not to jaywalk but come on folks teach your kids to be human for heavens sake and respect life first!

There is also a new phenomenon happening as well..namely those annoying snot noses who deliberately jaywalk right in front of traffic, and move verrryyy slowly. They generally are smoothing their hair, looking straight at you, as if to say "yea, I'm in your way, and I'm staying here". Happened to me last night in Seattle...little sh*t went so slow, and was looking at the light waiting for it to turn red so I would have to stop. Whatever.
.
I'm thinking maybe this uptick in hit and runs on pedestrians are these delightful people driving their own cars, and the thought process might be:
"Hell no...nobody's doing that to ME...I'm the only one who gets to."
Just a thought...it can't be just a coincidence that both behaviors started happening at the same time.
.

I think their genetically related if not the same people! Could it be the water?
Maybe they drink at the same trough as the " let me speed up so you can't merge",- "hey I'll block the intersection to get ahead", " let me talk on the cell phone in public at a 400 decibel giggle screech", "wow I hit that car- not having MY insurance go up".
But all griping aside- I am so appalled at the increase in sub humans who knowingly have injured someone and just speed off. This wasn't the case here but how many stories have we seen in just the last couple of months? 10? More?

Doubtful we're just hearing about them more. I don't know the stats. though.

Because people are putting up with it. Every time someone stops in the middle of the road and patiently waits for a douchebag jaywalker to plod across, they create more and more and more of them.

Submitted by ldozy1 on June 29, 2008 - 1:10pm.

Amanda- please type hit and run or pedestrian killed in the search box and then tell me how many of these deaths were jaywalkers.
It's not "putting up with it" its choosing not to compound THEIR ignorance by feeling YOU have the right increase the odds its a death offense. No one should ever want to risk that burden. Nothing in my life is so important that I would in anyway increase the danger to another human being- stupid or not.

Submitted by AmandaDaniel on June 29, 2008 - 1:12pm.

I love it when people do that.

It's become a game for some. I really don't understand the motivation...I assume they have little to no power in their own lives, and try and exert control wherever they see it. Who knows..I'm not Dr. Phil!
.
I guess I'm just trying to get from A to B...Not looking for a fight with a total stranger. You're probably right though..the more we put up with it, the more it will happen. The cops have to prioritize, and I suspect that jaywalking is pretty low on that list.

The only time I ever slow down or stop for a pedestrian is when they're crossing at a designated crosswalk or light. If they're idiots who are too stupid to walk the couple dozen yards and wait at the light, then they take their life into their own hands. I'm sure I'm not the only one who speeds UP when encountering a jaywalker.

Submitted by yabetchya on July 1, 2008 - 9:20am.

Amanda, I always LOOK...... for what is comming. What would you do if you see a ball rolling in your path, speed up? a dog in the street? let me give you a true fact; from what you are saying,If either of my parents wanted to visit their neighbors right across the street, and they went to 'THE' corner( unmarked CROSS WALK) , you would speed up????? HECK,,they would then have walk 3 blocks down a very steep hill then walk back up,I figure every corner is a crosswalk marked or not! I think your statements are really sad.......SORRY,,,,,Amanda calm down

Submitted by ldozy1 on June 29, 2008 - 12:47pm.

Here's hoping you wrote that with tongue in cheek. If not, I really pray you ARE the only one who speeds up.Otherwise your more a part of the problem- having a car doesn't give you the right to be judge, jury and ultimately- executioner.

Submitted by AmandaDaniel on June 29, 2008 - 12:51pm.

But speeding up, especially if you've got a good pair of headlights, will do two things-
* scare the hell out of them,
* ensure that, at least for the time being, they don't do it again,
* prevent some OTHER motorist from possibly killing them.

No matter how rude a jaywalker is, I haven't seen a single one who hasn't booked it back to the corner at the sound of an engine rev.

Wouldn't it really be more fun to mount an airhorn on your vehicle and give it a blast when needed to clear the roadway of illegal peds. That airhorn would make them jump right out of their skin. This would also apply to those in crosswalks walking against the don't walk signal. This is one of my pet peeves and they aren't limited to kids doing it.

Submitted by Badtothebone on June 30, 2008 - 9:15pm.

Or would he just let his driver handle it?

Submitted by AmandaDaniel on June 30, 2008 - 8:49pm.

I think an airhorn would work too.

Submitted by ldozy1 on June 29, 2008 - 1:00pm.

I still find that mind set frightening. It's the same one as the guy who tailgates, leaving no room for error ( like the car ahead stalling) or swerves around on the right shoulder- hitting the person on the sidewalk.....
driving isn't a joke, a car shouldn't ever be used as a threat or weapon to show your displeasure with another's actions. Its kind of like the excuse " well I didn't mean to shoot him when I pulled my gun- I just wanted to scare him". Treat your car and driving as something having the same risk to take someones life- including yours.

Submitted by AmandaDaniel on June 29, 2008 - 1:04pm.

"I still find that mind set frightening. It's the same one as the guy who tailgates, leaving no room for error"- that statement is ridiculous. The tailgater is both breaking the law and being an ass at the same time. As someone who never exceeds the speed limit, I deal with those itchyfoot people all the time. And you know what? I put THEM in the same boat as the jaywalkers. In other words, you made a piss-poor analogy. A better one would be the person who, when tailgated, suddenly slams on their brakes in order to piss off the tailgater, then slooooooows down to about 10mph UNDER the speed limit, and while the infuriated tailgater starts to swerve around in the highway trying to get around the car and zoom off at about 80MPH, swerving to match. THAT would be an apt analogy.

I thought this was a discussion. Please feel free to share your right to rudeness with others who are interested. I'm not.

Submitted by AmandaDaniel on June 29, 2008 - 1:14pm.

So you make a bad analogy and then go run home crying? Pff. You're almost as bad as beerboy.

Submitted by davidjohnjr on June 30, 2008 - 3:55am.

Funny, because it's you that's always running away from the topic. Funny because even when it's obvious you won't admit it. You'll just say that the issue "isn't worth discussing anymore" or my comments were "so ridiculous they didn't warrant a response".
Pot calling the kettle black.

Submitted by MarksonofDarwin on June 29, 2008 - 12:44pm.

Yea, I slow down.
Something about watching another human being suffer as a direct result of my actions doesn't appeal to me!
There's also nothing appealing about those nights in jail waiting for the trial.....
