Military able to connect with local community

I was astounded when I read the letter complaining about the air show at McChord Air Force Base. My daughter and I attended it and were thrilled beyond words at the incredible demonstrations the pilots and crews put on in their high-performance aircraft.

Thanks for your letter! Finally a sound, logical, common-sense person arises from the indigenant species in Pierce County!

Personally I support the air show. The military does a fine job as far as I am concerned. I think the problem with a lot of people is they lump the military and what they do in with the Albatross in Chief. Two different things.

It's funny how people forget that there is a difference. Both sides of the partisan game seem to "forget" that when it fits their agenda.

I know this is off topic, but everytime I read about a Hummer, I am reminded of the radio show I listened to awhile back. It was one of those call in car talk type shows where people have great discussions about spark plugs and oil filters!

Anyway the shows guest was an automotive engineer, and the topic of the Hummer came up. They were discussing the soon to be available, "heavy duty Hummer". The shows host was surprised and thought ALL Hummers were heavy duty. The engineer revealed that, Nope, the regular, average, everyday Hummer was just a SUBURBAN with heavy duty LOOKING body panels! HAAAA!!

Thousands of bucks for a CHEVY!! I love it! HAAAAAA!!!!!

OK back to topic now...........

A truck that has been enclosed with leather seats put in!!
I have never understood the attraction to these pigs....but, many people obviously are. To each their own.
I just wish that they understood that they are in a truck...and NOT the old Volvo that they traded in. A fact that escapes many.
Personally, if I was going to spend the money those things are inflated to...I would much rather buy a nice looking sports car.

I think one point being made in the original letter is that during a time of war America (and its people) should adjust accordingly, for the benefit of the country.
I can see how the show would be a moral boost to some (although I'm not sure why, personally), and one could argue that they'd "waste that fuel anyways". Since the war, though, the only change Americans have been urged to make is to "continue shopping". No rations, no change in our lives, nada. Oh wait-the magnetic "I support the troops with a fake ribbon" was placed on some cars..that was a sacrifice to the clean lines of an automobile.

I'm not sure how the air show would be a recruitment tool-I don't know anyone who'd see some cool stunts and want to sign up to go to war.

"Wow! Look at that! That was crazy! I can't wait to sign up to go fight an emotion, I mean, the War on Terror!"

America's subconscious is apathetic so long as the war doesn't affect their lives; take away from their precious trips in their 4MPG H2 Hummers. So long as we're burning billions of dollars over there, we should have had to decrease our demand for petroleum products, metals, etc., to help keep the cost down. Instead we're told to "keep shopping" and everything will be alright. Just like it was been for the last seven and a half years.

provides exactly the same purpose as the May Day Parades in the old Soviet Union.

Well, if anyone knows about the good old United Soviet Socialist Republic, it should be Beerboy. I know you miss it Beerboy, but you know, you still have United Soviet Socialist city of Seattle to cling to!

pulls another fantasy out of thin air.

Sorry mike, the U.S.S.R. was a huge and utter failure. The Stalin regime was one of the most vicious and cruel in the history of the earth.
.
As I have written many times before, Marx was right when he wrote about the problems inherent in Capitalism but his predictions of a communist workers utopia were completely wrong.

I'm sure the "problems inherent in Capitalism" are what account for the fact that there are more illegals in the U.S. than there are Cubans in Cuba.

This type of writing shows that Some americans don't care about the military they don't think we need it just like the DEMOCRATS.... Beerboy must be a non vet and is afraid to support the troops>??????

Submitted by beerBoy on July 24, 2008 - 5:56pm.

The May Day Parades of the U.S.S.R. was a show of military might put on, among other reasons, to increase support for the military endeavors of the nation.
.
The Air Shows are for......?

Submitted by Commandtiger on July 26, 2008 - 7:33am.

I just don't like our Military being compared to The old USSR.

the real cool jets that you don't get to see everyday. Up close and personal.
.
That's why I like them, anyway, beer.

Submitted by beerBoy on July 24, 2008 - 6:12pm.

you liked the show.
.
I really doubt that their reasoning is that affected by Witchiwoman's preferences ;-)
.
I'm thinking the shows exist for the same reason they maintain a military band and choir - good p.r.

Give me a break, seriously. Leave that old, tired, nonsensical rhetoric where it belongs-try the Fox news site, I know you'd fit in-if that's the way you think.
It's one thing to debate what he said, it's another to go on a rant claiming that garbage about "supporting the troops".

Hey-you don't support the troops!
Yes, actually I do..
Do you have a yellow magnetic ribbon on your car?
Well, no but what does that-
Well, I'm a vet and you're not, so you must not support them. In fact, you must wish that they didn't exist at all! Stupid non-vet! Don't criticize this country! If you even question it, you aren't a patriot!
Hold on there...didn't the politicians on "your side" vote against veterans benefits, and went kicking and screaming the whole way through any benefits given? Weren't the Democrats fighting to give veterans an education, and make sure they're taken care of when they return? Isn't it the job of any true American to question all that is America, to protect its sanctity??

Obviously dramatic and over-exaggerated, but your comments warrant it.

I'm voting Dem and I LOVE the airshow. Give me a break please.

... It shows our military prowess at its high level and that is something I am proud to support with my time, money and talent! Mind you I don't agree with this administration or its policies, but when the call was made, these citizens came forward and dedicated their efforts to our country. I am proud of these men and women ... they are the face of our country doing a difficult job on foreign soil ... By being there Saturday, I wanted to show my support, thank them personally, and find a little positive light in today's dark world .... To say it's a democrat/republican falls short of what it means to be an American ...
