Boy, 11, bites pit bull to fend off attack

An 11-year old boy is in Brazil's media spotlight after sinking his teeth into the neck of a dog that attacked him. Local newspapers reported on Thursday that Gabriel Almeida was playing in his uncle's backyard in the city of Belo Horizonte when a pit bull named Tita lunged at him and bit him in the left arm.

most dogs don't know what to think if you bite them back....LOL I have to growl and bark at mine when the get to dominate.

3. You know what a growl means, and your dog knows what a growl
means.

If you think that mutually meaningful language doesn’t exist,
you’re not thinking creatively enough. What does it say to you
when a dog growls at you? Anything from “get away from my food”
to “back off, dude,” right? Yet in every case, a dog’s growl
typically means that she is not happy with whatever you’ve done.
And you’ve seen dogs react to other dogs’ growls, right? So you
know what a growl means, and your dog knows what a growl means.
Where’s the disconnect? Growl at your dog!

No, seriously. The next time your pooch starts stepping outside
her bounds or doing something you don’t like, growl at her. A
nice, strong, guttural growl that would put the alpha wolf in a
pack to shame. While you’re growling, look directly into her
eyes. You’re almost guaranteed that she’ll back off.

A male dog may take that as an invitation to fight.
.
Pit biting seems to be a world wide phenom.

and it's a problem no matter what the dog
the media typically doesn't carry the attacks of non pit attacks to the same degree.
if a pit bull attacks then 5-10 outlets take it on if a non-pit attcks then its just local. (you can see this with the tnt pushing this brazil story.)

and studies have shown that pit bulls bites are not any more severe than any other dog.

here's a link to a paper that cites a study that showed
severity based on breed was not statistically different
8% of the total reported bites were from pit bulls
16% of those were considered 3-5 in severity (five being most severe). A breed comparison shows that Dalmatians had a 3-5 severity rate of 24%; Rottweiler 21%; Doberman 17%; Golden Retriever 16%?source

also, the dutch just lifted a 15yr ban on pit bulls because it was determined that the ban didn't reduce bite numbers or severity of the bite.

every month there are numerous stories of severe attacks by non-pit bull, but they don't get the "air play".

here's just a few from this year(note how many have the breed name in the headline), the most recent being an english sheep dog that killed a 14 month baby

Proving once again these nasty dogs know no boundaries. Back in the olden days a dog bit and it went down. No questions asked.

Please! Pit Bulls are just mean animals trained to kill throughouttime with small evil little brains. Who knows what sets them off half the time?

very well from commenting on every pit bull related story that these dogs are used throughout the country as service dogs.
