Flying Moose Lands at Northwest Trek

She isn’t a reindeer, but a cervid of another kind landed at Northwest Trek this weekend thanks to the work of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and the generosity of Alaska Airlines.

The female moose calf was orphaned at birth last spring in an Anchorage driveway and could not be returned to the wild without a mother’s natural survival training. The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center at Portage Glacier took her in and cared for her for the ensuing months.

Alaska Airlines agreed to ship the moose as a public service. She was crated and trucked to Anchorage where the airline placed her on a nonstop flight to SeaTac. The pilots checked on her during the flight, adjusting the temperature to make her more comfortable. Northwest Trek staff picked her up, crate and all, and drove her to her new home at the park. The youngster stands about 60 inches tall at the shoulder at an estimated weight of 400 pounds.
